If you’re a human, there’s a chance that you’ve set a goal at some point. You’ve also probably realized how hard it is to reach the goals that you set. If that’s the case for you, fear not: you’re not alone. In fact, a recent study showed that 92 percent of people don’t reach their goals. However, just because reaching goals is hard (and many people fail at it) doesn’t mean that you have to throw in the towel. In fact, by changing the way you approach working towards a goal, you can drastically change the outcome you experience.

Why Do We Fail to Reach Goals?

If you want something bad enough, you’d think that you’d be able to figure out a way to get it for yourself. However, people are generally good at just one of the following three parts of goal-getting — starting things and coming up with ideas, doing things and staying busy, or finishing things and following through — but not the others. Rarely are people ever good at all of the important skills required for reaching goals. This often leads to a lack of success when undertaking new endeavors, or trying to change up bad behaviors. Because reaching goals often takes a lot of hard work — and that work lasts far beyond the initial moment of inspiration or motivation — people who can’t repeatedly show up and do the work, day in and day out, find that they can’t reach where they want to go.

Change Your Approach

There’s no magic trick to doing the work differently in order to reach your goals. What it actually takes is approaching your work differently. If a goal feels far away from you, you may feel inclined to look at each day as a tall mountain you have to climb. However, instead of looking at each bit of work as a struggle towards a bigger end, try to approach each activity as a challenge that you can enjoy facing and overcoming. Break down a bigger goal into smaller, individual tasks that you can complete and file away; then, at the end, all of these complete tasks will add up to your one bigger goal.

By shifting your perspective towards goal-getting just slightly, and tackling mini goal after mini goal, you can not only up your success rates, but also boost your own natural, day-to-day happiness and drastically change your life for the better!
